Popular MP3 conversions

  • WAV to MP3. WAV files are large and uncompressed. Converting to MP3 usually makes them around ten times smaller.
  • M4A to MP3. iPhone voice memos and many downloads are M4A. MP3 plays on more devices.
  • FLAC to MP3. Keep your lossless files at home and put MP3 copies on your phone.
  • WMA, OGG and OPUS to MP3. Older or less common formats become an MP3 that works everywhere.

Which MP3 quality should I choose?

For most people, Recommended is the right choice. The MP3 converter looks at your original file and picks a bitrate that keeps its quality without wasting space. For example, it won’t save a 128 kbps file at 320 kbps, which would only make it bigger without making it sound any better.

If you want to choose yourself, 320 kbps gives the best quality, 192 kbps is very good for music, 128 kbps is standard, and 64 or 96 kbps makes small files that are fine for speech and audiobooks.

How the MP3 converter works

The MP3 converter is powered by FFmpeg, the free, open-source engine used by many professional audio and video apps, together with the well-known LAME MP3 encoder. A version built to run inside your browser does the conversion on your own device, so you get desktop-quality MP3 files without installing anything or uploading your audio.

MP3 converter FAQ

Is this MP3 converter free?

Yes. There’s no account, no watermark and no limit on how many files you convert.

Will converting a low-quality file to 320 kbps make it sound better?

No. Converting can’t add detail that isn’t in the original, which is why the Recommended setting never goes much above your file’s own quality.

Do song details like title and artist carry over?

Yes. Title, artist, album and other details from your original file are copied into the MP3 when they are present.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Your file is converted by your own browser on your own device. Nothing is uploaded, and nothing is kept after you close the page.

How big can my file be?

Up to 150 MB on a phone or tablet and 500 MB on a computer.
