How to Read These Stock Market Charts
Each ticker symbol represents a stock, exchange-traded fund, market index or cryptocurrency. The displayed price shows the latest market data available to the chart provider, while the percentage change shows how much the asset has moved during the applicable trading period.
The charts provide a quick visual look at recent price direction. An upward trend does not guarantee that an asset will continue rising, and a downward trend does not necessarily mean that it will continue falling. Prices can change because of earnings, economic reports, interest-rate expectations, company news, geopolitical events and general market sentiment.
SPY and QQQ Market Direction
SPY tracks the S&P 500, while QQQ tracks the Nasdaq-100. Watching these two ETFs can provide a quick view of broader U.S. market conditions, particularly the performance of large-cap and technology stocks.
Many traders and investors watch SPY and QQQ alongside individual stocks because broader market direction can influence price movement across multiple sectors. A strong market does not mean every stock will rise, but it can provide useful context when reviewing individual companies.
